Katie Ingram has always loved niche, little known stories, or things that have long been forgotten by society.
She also thinks they make the best books.
In her first book, Breaking Disaster: Newspaper Stories of the Halifax Explosion (2017, Pottersfield), she traced the first stories that were published following the 1917 disaster—many of which haven’t been told in their entirety since those first reports.
In her second book, The Undesirables: A History of Rockhead Prison (Fall 2025, Pottersfield), she chronicles the history and people connected to Halifax’s former city prison, a structure that has long been forgotten due to time and development.
This is something she strives to do in her journalism work as well, though she is always open to cover new topics and stories that come her way. (She once wrote a story about an elementary school worm race, but that is another story for another day).
Aside from writing and publishing stories, Katie is also a part-time journalism instructor with the University of King’s College School of Journalism, Writing and Publishing in Halifax.
In her spare time, you can find her curled up with a good book or spending time with her pet pig, Snuggles.
